One of my absolute favorite things on a cold day is drinking a piping hot mug of hot cocoa! There’s just nothing that compares. It brings back memories of my childhood when I would spend hours outside sledding and come in and get a nice warm cup of hot chocolate. Now I enjoy doing the same with my kids!
We’ve made a tradition of sledding on Christmas, and this year I could not wait to get home to make some homemade hot cocoa! I had been experimenting with my recipe the week before and finally had it perfected! Now I’m excited to share that recipe with you guys!
Hot cocoa is SO easy to make, and once you try this recipe you’ll never want to make the store-bought kind again. Seriously guys, the other day my husband asked me to make him some hot chocolate and when I reached for the premade stuff he promptly says “no I wanted the homemade stuff.” It’s THAT good!

What you’ll need:
3 cup milk
1 cup cream
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup chocolate chips
marshmallows or whipped cream for topping
*You can replace the cream with milk if you don’t have any on hand, but it really is what gives the cocoa its rich and creamy texture!*
In medium sized sauce pan bring the milk and cream to a simmer. Add in cocoa, salt, and sugar and continue simmering until the cocoa lumps go away. Now turn off the heat and add the chocolate chips whisking for a couple minutes until they are all incorporated!
That’s it! Now enjoy your warm, decadent treat!
